What can I do for you?
This is basically a bulging process. A tubular piece of plastic is heated and then pressurized internally and expanded into the caivty of a relatively cool split mold. Typical products are hollow, thin-walled containers or articles.
An example of an automated process is extrusion blow molding. Here a hollow tube of molten plastic is produced by an injection machine and is then pinched at one end.
The parison is then placed into the open mold, the mold is closed, and the parison is expanded with an air nozzle to a diameter that is usually three time the parison diameter. The air pressure is usually between 50 and 100 psi. The part cools off after contact with the die, which is then opened and the part is ejected. Molds are usually made of aluminum and are vented to prevent entrapment of air.
Typical products made by blow molding are containers for fluid and solid food, medicine, or other products, laboratory ware, toys, and storage tanks for liquids, containers as large as 3 m3 capacity have been blow molded.
